Manitou Strings, a Colorado Springs-based band, is fronted by Spencer Wren, who writes all the original tunes that the band performs. This one, Carp's Lament, is a sweeter song than Wren usually pens. We like it a lot and it helps us remember a dear friend who used to play in the band and then had to go back east to his home to be with family. This is just a little clip of the song. We opened for Leon Majcen on a night when it snowed more than anyone was expecting. I mean---feet of snow. We showed up at Oskar Blues on Tejon, downtown Colorado Springs ready to play and we had a great time. Leon was very kind and engaging and his bass player, #kosmickenny was fun, too. We wish him the best on his travels across America from Florida.
Was it the altitude? Or the edibles? That made last night incredible? Was it the steel guitar? Or that shootin' star that elevated us so far? We've been hanging around for awhile, I like your smile you got my style. We were merely curious. Now we're getting serious. Up Pikes Peak, get away for the night, out in the dark we saw the light. Our veils they fell away so fast; that clumsiness it couldn't last. Was it the pint of Rye? Or O'Ryan in the sky that left me feelin' high, high, high.
An original tune by Spencer Wren, Manitou Strings Our very special thanks to Josh Alford for his artistry, and recording mastery.
A huge shout out to Josh Alford who recorded this with great intention, beauty and attention to detail. This was a very informal, living room session between five musicians who gathered for pizza and songs. This particular song is an original composition of Deirdre McCarthy and we played it through and Josh just captured the best of all of us. It's a very beautiful recording. Here's a short clip, for those with a short attention span. To watch the full video:
https://youtu.be/aKB50xCzAlE?si=7HCkHAgfASB7dZ9U We have a few shows in January. January 12, we (trio) are at Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort. I am making Green Chile and Corn Tamales. Just for fun. I hope you will come and try them. January 13 we (full band) are at Jack Quinn's Irish Pub & Restaurant. The Christmas decorations are gone, but thankfully, they still have fish and chips and a cold Guinness. On January 19, we have a very interesting opportunity....we are playing Axe and the Oak Whiskey House as a trio without Spencer. We have NEVER played without Spencer but he's got some fancy weekend planned, so...it's gonna be Joy, Bobby and Deirdre. We are each taking a turn and singing some new songs. It's going to be different and we hope you'll think we sound pretty good!! On Friday, January 26, another NEW and DIFFERENT configuration: Spencer and Joy, as a duet (Joy is scared to death and feels naked already just standing on a stage with ONE other musician). She likes hiding among all the talented musicians that we get to play with. We will be at Bell Brothers Brewing. Come on down and let's see if Joy can make it through the two sets. They play 6 to 8 pm Friday, January 19.
We were schedule Saturday, January 27 at Trails End Taproom, but, they closed the doors (until Spring)...we are all four available and ready to play, so if you have an alternative for us, we would love to hear about it! Help us fill out our schedule. |
